DIY Ruffle Tree Skirt

So I jumped on the bandwagon of all of the bloggers who decided to make a ruffle tree skirt this year. We are getting new-ish stockings (more to come on that in another post), and I knew that a new skirt was in order. I liked the ruffle skirt alright, but I knew that if I did it there were a few things that I wanted to do differently.

I wanted red and white instead of just neutral colors, mainly because our stockings have a lot of red in them. I also knew that I wanted to use all burlap because it's so cheap and I just like the look of it. So I've seen a few tutorials floating around there for the skirt, but this is the one that I chose to use:

I went to JoAnn's and purchased the following:

1 1/3 yards of white-ish Duck Canvas (to use instead of a drop cloth - once home, I cut into a 4' x 4' square)
2 yards of red burlap
2 yards of white-ish burlap
1 pack of extra long glue sticks

With all sale items and a coupon, my grand total with tax was $25 and change - so that's the final cost of this little project. Not too bad when you think about how much a tree skirt can run you elsewhere.

As for time, it took me about 2 hours for the entire process - cutting out the skirt, cutting the strips and gluing the ruffles. I only get naptime to do little projects like this, so I knew that I better get it done fast because the mess that it made was not going to be able to lie around once HUT woke up - he would have had just about anything he could get his hands on into his mouth.

So here are the pictures - I literally followed step-by-step the instructions on the Pin above, so if you want the instructions, I'd go visit her post!

 { for the most part, this was about the width of all of my strips of fabric, give or take a few here and there }

 { an upclose shot of the mess that was left all over the table, floor, etc. }

{ I just used a regular old, but very sharp, pair of scissors to cut the burlap. I also left it folded, so that my strips would be extra long, but you can do strips of any length }

{ the canvas, right before the ruffling began }

 { these were the only strips that I had left, so you really do use up about 4 yards of burlap for the project }

{ the final product }

If there's anything that I can tell you, it's that every part of this project does not have to be perfect. My strips were not all exactly the same width. My tree skirt was a total guesstimation as to where to cut the canvas to get the circle. And my ruffles weren't perfect either. It was really trial and error as to where exactly to glue and to place the burlap. The good thing is that my burlap stuck right on to the material so I didn't have to worry about holding it down for a minute to really get it to stick - that would have been a total PITA.

So there you have it, another Pinterest project complete!

  8. So cute! Does it seem like the glue will hold up well over time? I'd be worried about it coming undone...

  10. So I just read the tutorial and realized it's hot glue. When I read your list of supplies, I assumed you mean regular glue sticks. Which is totally stupid of me. I was wondering just how that would hold. Well duh! It wouldn't. Hot glue makes sense :)

  11. This is way cute! I have a ton of leftover burlap from my son's birthday party and I've been trying to figure out what to do with it. I might have to give this a try.
